UNDATED (KTHV) -- Recent T'Storms have brought large hail, but the storms are different than most. Ed explains in Weather 101.

Thunderstorms often produce hail, but there are different types of thunderstorms that can produce different types of hail. There have been several reports of hail recently even with temperatures very cold.

These storms are called elevated. The base of them form over a shallow layer of cold air at the surface. They can produce large hail, but tornadoes are more rare with elevated storms.

Surface based storms form closer to the ground when the air is warm. These types of storms can produce much larger hail and possible tornadoes.

Ed explains more in this edition of Weather 101.
