PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) - Police can ticket and fine you for a number of offenses, and soon. Pine Bluff authorities may be able to cite you for not pulling up your pants.

"It's disrespectful, you know what I'm saying? No one wants to see your underwear," said Pine Bluff resident, Donald Griffin.

Griffin sees no issue with the possibility of Pine Bluff enforcing a sagging ban. Alderman Charles Boyd proposes a $25 fine on pants, shorts, or skirts that sit three inches below the waistline, exposing underwear or skin in public view.

While fellow alderman George Stepps said droopy drawers offend him, he believes the ordinance won't hold up.

Pine Bluff tried to pass a similar law in 2007, but it failed to gain support. Stepps believes change should start in schools and law enforcement should not have to handle something so petty.

"They could get so tied up trying to stop everybody with saggy pants, as widespread as it is. Then, it'll take away from the duties where we need them most," said Stepps.

Alderman Stepps said the ordinance will go back to committee for a vote in the next couple of weeks. If the ordinance passes, offenders could avoid the fine by simply pulling up their pants once warned by police.
