EOLA, Texas (CBS/KLST) -- A weekend of bizarre shooting in various west Texas towns has authorities baffled. The one man crime spree two people, including the killer, dead, four others, including a county sheriff, wounded; and law enforcement trying to piece it all together.
Authorities are currently investigating why a man shot and killed one woman and injured four others, including the Concho County Sheriff early Sunday morning.
The first shooting took place around 4:30 a.m. when a 23-year-old suspect shot and injured a woman in the Eden area. Within the hour the same suspect shot and injured two more people at a convenience store in Brady before heading back to the Eden area and shooting another person.
By 6 a.m. the same suspect shot and killed a 42-year-old woman inside of her car in Eola. The victim's cousin was next door when the shooting happened, he explains what he heard. Ernest Torres says, "I heard a car beeping it's horn and within a few seconds that the horn stopped beeping I heard about five shots fired and then a vehicle drive off. As I got out of bed and walked into the living room, somebody had taken off and I had looked out and there was no one around except for the vehicle that had been shot at. It wasn't until I came out and stood on my neighbor's porch that I realized it was my cousin that had been shot."
Within minutes Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane encountered the suspect north of Eden on U.S. 83 when the suspect opened fire and wounded the sheriff.
D.P.S. troopers and the Texas Wildlife Game Warden arrived on scene and exchanged gun fire with the suspect who was shot and killed at the scene.
It is unknown why the attacks took place. An assault rifle, a handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition were recovered on the scene.
As the investigation into the shootings is ongoing, the victim's family are trying to figure out why something like this would happened. Torres says, "Things like this aren't suppose to happen in Eden. I don't know why someone would want to shoot my cousin. She didn't have any enemies."
The deceased 23-year-old suspect was a North Carolina resident. He remains unidentified at the time.
