JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - A 22-year-old mother of three was arrested and charged after deputies said she threw her nine-month-old son in the garbage.
Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call Saturday night which said that Brittany Cole had put the baby in the garbage shortly after the boy returned home from being with his father.
Deputies arrived at 201 W. Dixie Street in Altheimer and found that the child had already been removed by Cole's mother, who made the 911 call. Deputies learned that Cole became upset and threw the boy in the trash behind the home. She reportedly told the baby's father that she was tired of and could no longer continue caring for her son.
According to Cole's mother, Cole was visibility upset, grabbed her son, and left the residence. Cole's mother followed her and noticed her daughter running from the back of the home without her son. When her mother asked where the baby was, Cole apparently pointed to the garbage bin.
The mother said she found the baby, who was still breathing, inside. She took the baby out of the garbage then called 911.
Paramedics arrived and assessed the infant's heath; the baby did not suffer any injuries as a result of the incident. Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigators contacted an emergency case worker from the Department of Human Services (DHS) to determine placement of the infant and Cole's two other children.
Cole, who initially left the residence, returned a short time later and was arrested. Cole was transported to the W.C. "Dub" Brassell Adult Detention Center, where she was booked on one count of 1st Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Minor, a Class D Felony charge which will likely be upgraded by Jefferson County Prosecutors to Attempted Capital Murder.
Cole later appeared in Jefferson County District Court for a probable cause and bond hearing. She is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond and was ordered back to court for a July 22 hearing.
Cole, who was also declared indigent was appointed legal counsel from the Public Defender's Office to represent her.
