LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel says a new gun law approved this year doesn't allow the open carry of handguns in public, despite the argument by gun rights advocates.

McDaniel on Monday said in an advisory opinion that a law that made technical corrections concerning the possession of handguns in certain places didn't allow open carry. Arkansas law allows the carrying of a handgun on a journey, and the measure signed into law earlier this year defines a journey as traveling "beyond the county in which the person lives."

Gun rights advocates have insisted the new law clears the way for openly carrying handguns in public. The law is set to take effect next month.

McDaniel's opinion said the law applies narrowly to travel and doesn't allow open carry.
