LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Gov. Mike Beebe says a potential federal government shutdown would result in furloughs for some Arkansas employees and leave children in peril.

The governor said in a statement Monday that as many as 2,000 state employees would be furloughed in the event of a shutdown. Beebe says thousands more could face a similar fate if a shutdown drags on for an extended time.

Beebe says more than 85,000 meals for Arkansas children would not be provided and 2,000 newborn babies would not receive infant formula through the Department of Health's WIC program.

The House and Senate are expected to meet late into Monday night over the budget battle. If a deal is not reached, a government shutdown would officially begin at 12:01 a.m. EDT Tuesday (11:01 p.m. CDT).
