Video: Arkansans can shop among 71 types of health plans

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - October 1 is a major day for many Arkansans seeking health insurance. It is the first day the insurance exchange opens across the country as part of the Affordable Care Act. People without insurance, or those paying in the individual market, can now shop among 71 types of health plans.

"It was so expensive that I couldn't afford it," Jerdine Rabun explained. Insurance is coverage many would like to have, but sometimes just is not that easy to get. Jerdine Rabun had a well paying job with insurance, but about six years ago her life changed. "I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007."

Following the diagnosis, she began her chemotherapy treatment. Before she knew it, she was forced to make a decision-she had to drop her insurance before they dropped her.

"Probably within two months I started getting calls, 'Are you sure you need all those tests? Are you sure you need that procedure?'," she recalled.

Rabun did look into other options, but the cost was out of her price range. Now that insurance exchanges are open as part of the Affordable Care Act, people like Rabun can shop among 71 types of health plans.

"I can go back to work. I can go back part-time and work and have insurance, so that is a great thing," Rabun said.
