GARLAND COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - The Garland County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of a scam that is making the rounds.
Sheriff Larry Sanders sent an alert stating that people who are selling items online may be victimized by the buyer. In short, the buyer contacts the seller to purchase the item then sends a check that far exceeds to cost of the purchase. The buyer then asks the seller to cash the check and send the remaining balance back in a money order.
An example that Sheriff Sanders provided include a Garland County resident who reported she sells beauty products and was contacted via email by the suspect who wanted to order some items. The victim sent the suspect the total for the items and received a check in the amount of $1,970.00. The amount of the check was substantially more than the cost of the beauty products. The suspect told the victim the amount on the check was a mistake and to cash the check, then send the remaining balance back via a money order. Fortunately, the victim knew this was a scam.
Sanders said to, "Beware, as these scam artists are also targeting people who are selling items on Craigslist."
