Shoplifting call leads to police chase

    INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - A shoplifting suspect leads officers on a 22 mile police chase.

    Saturday morning Nov. 2, Independence County Sheriff's officers were sent to Walmart about a report of shoplifting. When they arrived they saw the suspect flee the area in a vehicle.

    Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but the suspect led officers on a 22 miles pursuit that ended in the Oil Trough area. According to the Sheriff's Office, during the chase the suspect's vehicle rammed two sheriff's department vehicles, but no one was injured.

    The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Dwayne Artis. During his arrest officers found a sawed-off shotgun within arm's reach.

    The investigation is ongoing and the Sheriff's Department expects to present to the 16th Judicial Prosecutors Office affidavits for formal charges for numerous and various felony charges.
