JONESBORO, Ark. (A-State) - Arkansas State senior libero Megan Baska won her 12th career Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week award, while freshman setter Mallory Warrington won her second straight SBC weekly award by being named Freshman of the Week the league office announced Monday.
Baska, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., earned her second SBC Defensive Player of the Week award this season and she will end her career with a Sun Belt Conference record 12 DPOW awards.
Playing in the last two regular season matches of her career, Baska was stellar against ULM and Texas State by recording a total of 55 digs for a 6.88 digs per set average. She registered 22 digs for a 7.33 digs per set average against the Warhawks on Friday before recording a season-high 33 digs on Senior Day against the Bobcats. For the season, she has a career-high 587 digs on the second highest digs per set average of her career at 4.70.
Warrington, a freshman from St. Louis, Mo., won her second straight weekly award after being named the SBC Setter of the Week Nov. 11.
Since being moved into the starting setter role Warrington has excelled. She dished out 91 assists for an 11.30 assists per set average, recorded 24 digs, and also registered 13 kills against ULM and Texas State. She had 38 assists on a 12.67 assists per set average against ULM and fell one kill shy of A-State's first triple-double this season by handing out a season-high 53 assists with 18 digs and nine kills against Texas State. For the season, she has 463 assists for a 7.12 assists per set average and is the team leader in double-doubles with six. She's fifth on the team in digs with 132 and also has 45 kills.
A-State begins play in the Sun Belt Conference volleyball tournament Thursday, Nov. 21 against in-state rival UALR. The Red Wolves and Trojans are scheduled to square off in the first match of the tournament at noon.
