Anderson Silva recovering after surgery on broken leg

Anderson Silva remained in a Las Vegas hospital Sunday morning following successful surgery to repair a broken leg he suffered trying to regain the UFC's middleweight title. During Saturday night's fight, Silva (33-6 MMA, 16-2 UFC) threw a kick that was checked by champion Chris Weidman (11-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC), and in the process Silva's left leg was badly broken. The fight was the main event of UFC 168 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The UFC estimated his recovery time to be as long as six months. Questions will now be raised about Silva's future, whether he can eventually return from such an injury or if this fight was effectively a retirement bout.

Suicide bomber kills 16 at Russian train station

A suicide bomber struck a busy railway station in southern Russia on Sunday, killing at least 15 others and wounding scores more, officials said, in a stark reminder of the threat Russia is facing as it prepares to host February's Olympics in Sochi. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing in Volgograd, but it came several months after Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov called for new attacks against civilian targets in Russia, including the Sochi Games.

Cold homes heat power controversy in Michigan

Power outages stretched into a second week Sunday for thousands of Michigan residents, darkening the moods of power customers victimized by a pre-Christmas ice storm. About 3,200 Lansing Board of Water and Light customers were among those who remained without power Sunday morning, hours after angry and frustrated residents rallied outside an East Lansing elementary school. Many also appeared at a utility news conference Saturday, shouting questions and demanding to learn how much longer they must live in cold, dark homes, on friends' couches or in hotels.

A&E calls off 'Duck Dynasty' suspension

A&E ducked away from a controversy surrounding its hugely popular reality series Duck Dynasty on Friday, saying in a statement that Phil Robertson will film new episodes of the show. The network had previously announced it was suspending the patriarch of the clan behind the successful Louisiana-based Duck Commander duck-calling business.

Icebound ship in Antarctica faces rescue setback

Passengers aboard an ice-bound cruise ship remained trapped off the coast of Antarctica. The Chinese ice-breaker Snow Dragon came within 7 miles of the stranded ship but had to retreat after the ice became too thick, expedition spokesman Alvin Stone told the Associated Press. Aurora Australis is expected to arrive Sunday, said Lisa Martin, spokeswoman for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which is coordinating the rescue. The Snow Dragon will remain in the area in case its help is needed.

    Great-granddaughter of cereal heiress slain

The great-granddaughter of heiress and socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post was found slain at her luxury spa resort on the Caribbean island of Roatan, Honduras police said Friday. Roatan police chief Alex Madrid said Nedenia Post Dye was found stabbed in her room on Dec. 22. He said police had arrested a local singer whom Dye was helping quit drugs. "She was a good woman who worked with young people at risk, drug addicts and alcoholics," Madrid said. The suspect, Lenin Roberto Arana, told police that he and Dye, 46, had been romantically involved, Madrid said.

Ronda Rousey submits Miesha Tate by 3rd-round armbar

For Ronda Rousey, one streak ended, but another remained intact. Living up to her reputation as the world's nastiest arm collector, Ronda Rousey again stopped Miesha Tate with an armbar to retain her UFC women's bantamweight title - though Tate became the first woman to make it out of the first round against the champ. The stoppage for Rousey came 58 seconds into the third round.
