Eighty workers at the Planters peanut plant in Fort Smith are laid off for the week. The company says the slowdown is due to a seasonal drop in sales.
Planters says sales typically drop off at this time of year. The 80 workers are to return to their jobs on Monday. In all, the plant employs 350 people.
Another temporary lay off is planned for the week of March 17. Then, only a maintenance crew will be at the plant. The company says it expects a return to normal production after the March stoppage.
The Planters facility in Fort Smith began operations in 1975.
