LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Trustees of the University of Arkansas have expressed support for Fayetteville Chancellor G. David Gearhart for his leadership amid a budget crisis in one division.

At their meeting Friday in Little Rock, board chairman Jane Rogers read a letter lauding Gearhart for taking "full responsibility" after the school's fundraising arm showed a multi-million deficit.

Rogers said the school is committed to financial accountability and the freedom of information. She said the university could do a better job in some areas, but that it also has had "wonderful accomplishments" under the chancellor.

A former university spokesman says Gearhart ordered his staff to destroy public documents, a claim the chancellor denies.
