LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- The potential for Little Rock to host a bowl game for the football post season appear to be increasing.
Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson attended a private luncheon Thursday (June 13) at War Memorial Stadium to discuss the progress of bringing a bowl game to Little Rock. The game is still in the development stages and nothing has been confirmed. However, Benson believes there is a good chance a bowl would happen as soon as December 2014.
"We think that the additions of Appalachian State and Georgia Southern add to the quality of football in the Sun Belt. We're expecting four or five bowl eligible teams per year in the future. And because of that we need more bowl games," Benson says.
The bowl game under discussion would host a team from the Sun Belt Conference and the Mid American Conference. Benson says if the game does come to Little Rock it would be held at War Memorial Stadium. He visited the stadium back in December. MAC Commissioner Dr.Jon Steinbrecher is expected to visit later this year.
UALR Athletics Director Chris Peterson is campaigning for a bowl game to come to Little Rock. Peterson says if the game is approved it will be called the "Rice Bowl."
"Our mantra is 'It's AR time to shine.' We want to promote the product rice and the Arkansas rice bowl. You've got the Orange bowl, you've got the Rose bowl, you got the Sugar bowl. You know rice is the number one product in Arkansas. [Arkansas is] the number one rice state in the country. The feeling is to promote the product rice," says Peterson.
Peterson says they are currently seeking potential television partners for this bowl game. A final decision on the bowl game is expected in the coming months.
