The second-seeded Swiss slugger took care of 2011 Kuala Lumpur runner-up Marcos Baghdatis 6-1, 7-5 on the hardcourts at Putra Indoor Stadium.

In other action involving seeds, 32-year-old No. 4 Jurgen Melzer of Austria handled German qualifier and fellow left-hander Mischa Zverev 7-5, 6-4 and No. 5 Frenchman Julien Benneteau topped Spaniard Pablo Andujar 7-6 (10-8), 6-2. Benneteau was last year's runner-up here to Argentine Juan Moanco.
