Brussels, Belgium (SportsNetwork.com) - The WTA tournament in Brussels has folded after only three years.

The clay-court event, which became too expensive to stage, was held the week before the French Open.

"The current economic context and the ever-increasing investments to meet the demands of the WTA for the Premier label made it a difficult, near impossible task," the tournament said in a statement.

Estonian Kaia Kanepi captured this year's Brussels Open in late-May, when the tournament was plagued by bad weather and small crowds.

The Brussels Open replaced the Warsaw Open in 2011. Other champions in Brussels were former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and former Wimbledon runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska.
