ARKADELPHIA, Ark (HSU) - Ronald Lawson had a career night in leading Henderson State to an 83-68 win over Southern Arkansas, Tuesday at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Lawson recorded his third double-double of the season having a career-high 20 points and 15 rebounds which was also a career best. The junior from East St. Louis, Ill. shot 9-of-14 from the field and had 10 defensive boards.
The Reddies, 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the Great American Conference, put on a show in the first-half knocking down 19-of-32 shots for 59 percent to build a 46-29 lead at halftime.
Taylor Smith set the tone for the Reddies in the first 20 minutes scoring 14 points and was 4-for-4 from the 3-point arc.
Southern Arkansas, 6-8 overall and 3-6 in the GAC slowly chipped away at the Reddie lead in the second half and cut the deficit to single digits. But the Reddies were able to pull away with the help of some solid inside play my Lawson and Reggie Murphy.
Henderson State dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Muleriders 40 to 22 with the Reddies scoring 21 second chance points.
Murphy ended the game with 17 points and 5 rebounds, while Smith finished with 18 points and 4 assists.
Melvin Haynes had a big game scoring 11 points while dishing out 7 assists and grabbing 6 rebounds.
Deoirvay Johnson was the fifth Reddie to score in double-figures having 10 points.
Nemo Sanchez led Southern Arkansas with 24 points while Tyrell Taylor added 15.
They Reddies ended the game shooting 57 percent from the field, making 34-of-60 shots, while Southern Arkansas was 27-of-58 for 47 percent from the floor.
Henderson State will next play host to Ouachita Baptist in the Southern Bancorp Battle of the Ravine on Thursday with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
