LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - There is nothing like fresh veggies in your own backyard. Anybody can have a vegetable garden as long as you have about seven hours of sunshine.
At the home we're at today, the homeowner did have to get out and dig up the grass to make their bed. All they did was lay weed mat across their existing back yard and assembled plastic planter boxes.
These boxes come in kits from any local lumber yard. The greatest thing about the kits is that you don't have to cut wood, nail, or use screws. Because they are plastic, they are never going to rot. Because they are raised, you are guaranteed to fill them with really good soils. The main rule is to not buy the cheap stuff. Make sure you have good soil and good drainage.
For an added bonus, you can even use a portable green house to start your seeds early in the season and get ahead of the game. You can buy these at garden centers or online.
If you want to water your garden, you don't have to spend a lot of money. You can get a water barrel and attach it to your gutter with a faucet at the bottom, so you can get water year round without having to pay for it.
This particular home even has a worm farm. You can go on the internet and learn how to do your own worm farm, so you have fresh worms for your garden and even for your compost pile. Compost piles sit in the corner of the yard, so we waste nothing and everything is grown organically.
In short, there is nothing like fresh veggies in your backyard. Not only is it good for you, but it saves you lots of money.
