LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Pulaski County Quorum Court approved an ordinance appropriating $50,000 from the general fund to subsidize a spay/neuter program through the group Arkansans for Animals.

AFA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of animals. In the past, spaying and neutering was $35 for cats and $65 for dogs. Now, it will only cost $20 for cats and $40 for dogs, regardless of sex or size.

Rabies shots will also be $5, rather than $10.

This AFA clinic is primarily a spaying and neuter clinic, rather than a place to take sick pets for treatment. The clinic recently moved to a new facility off I-30.

This is the second year the county has worked with AFA to provide these procedures. Last year, a few hundred were provided for free. This year, several thousand will be made available at a reduced cost.

AFA began their spay/neuter outreach in 1998 with a mobile spay/neuter vehicle. Since then, over 70,000 pets have benefitted.
