LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Craig's Twist 67 is all about Father's Day. Who do you think was the greatest TV dad of all time?
I asked that on Facebook and received over 100 comments. Andy Griffith won. Wise enough to be a single dad and limit Barney to one bullet.
Bill Cosby was a close second, and the rest of the votes got scattered over the last 60 years of TV.
Interesting, but when we talked about this in the newsroom, no one could come up with a current TV dad that could rate up there with Sheriff Andy or Cliff. Of course, those dads had scripts. They had accomplished writers who promoted an image. We dads are not so lucky.
Real life comes at us fast, with no commercial breaks. We make instant decisions hoping they'll somehow teach a life lesson that provides a good foundation for our children. I look back on it and know there were so many mistakes I made and yet, my kids have been able to thrive in spite of me. My wife had a lot to do with that.
Through it all, two wonderful, compassionate young people walk this earth contributing to society in their own way.
My wish for all fathers is that you have a moment like I did in 1998. My daughter was out on her own, but had come back to our house for dinner one night. We got to reminiscing and she said to me, "You know, Dad, when I was growing up, I knew when you came into the house and called my name, something good was about to happen."
Move over, Andy Griffith.
