NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark (KTHV) -- A one day event, in hundreds of locations across the nation, is being held September 15 to remind teens to keep it safe on the road.

In North Little Rock, the North Little Rock Mayor's Youth Council, Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, State Farm and M.A.D.D. sponsored the event in the parking lot of Kroger on McCain Boulevard.

Raygan Sylvester is a 16-year-old driver who also has a very special place in her heart for the importance of safe driving.

"About 3 years ago my brother Cody was headed back to college and he fell asleep at the wheel and the only reason he survived is because he was wearing his seatbelt."

In addition to the importance of seatbelts, organizers focused on the rules of the road, saying no to distracted driving and even gave the teens a chance to try out the Pulaski County Sheriff's "drunk goggles".

Sylvester is a new driver herself. But she knows--and wants to share--what's most important to her fellow teens.

"The reason that they really made this such a big deal is because the number one killer of teens is car crashes. So they wanted to implement safe driving and make sure they knew all the safe-driving tactics to do so while they're growing up and being safe, they can be safe on the road." says Sylvester.

"You can't be texting you can't be listening to loud music, talking to your friends but also--if you are in a car crash you have to make sure you're wearing your seatbelt. Because it is proven to be the only way to prevent death or serious injury in a car crash. I've been really trying to get the word out since his wreck."

With a spirited smile and braving the weather, Sylvester is on"track" to doing just that.

"I saw first hand the effects that it had on my entire family, on the people that Cody knew, on his school and on him and his ability to walk especially!"
