NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and for some families a big dinner isn't an option, but the Kiwanis Club is working to change that.

About 20 volunteers came out early this morning to help members of their community. The Kiwanis club started off assembling food boxes at the Walmart in Sherwood. The filled up more than a hundred boxes then took to the streets to keep a long time tradition alive.

"We started assembling the boxes with the turkeys and canned goods and each box will have a pie and rolls," says volunteer Haskell Anderson. These boxes will go to families needing a holiday meal.

Secretary treasurer of the Kiwanis club, Haskell Anderson says they are filling 180 boxes with food to help their community.

"We know there's a need out there and some families struggle to put a Thanksgiving meal on the table and we just want to be able to help them," says Anderson. The North Little Rock school district helps the club select needy families in the community. Sabrina Nelson says without this box their Thanksgiving plate, wouldn't be as full. "We would put something together but it wouldn't be as big but we would put something together for our family," explains Nelson.

The Kiwanis club delivered these food boxes to senior citizens around North Little Rock, afterwards they come over to the North Little Rock High School West campus where they met up with the Key club and finished giving out the food. This is the 23rd year for the Kiwanis club to give out food boxes. They also work with care link to find senior citizens in need.
