MENA, Ark. (KTHV) - In a story that rocked an entire community, an 80-year-old man was found dead in a ditch and a teenage girl was charged with his murder.
The murder happened Monday, Dec. 4 in Mena-a town in rural Western Arkansas, and the 17-year-old accused of Lloyd Cole's death is being charged as an adult with first-degree murder.
Police said Cole's body was found less than a mile away from his home and neighbors said his death has them all shaken up.
"It's a big shock really. Things like that just don't happen here," said Joann Aynes, who has lived across the street from Cole for 48 years. "Well he was just a great neighbor, a great neighbor and never harmed a fly. Yeah. We've been good neighbors. Yeah."
Cole became known for his daily walks around their neighborhood and at 80-years-old, Aynes said she worried about his safety but never dreamed this would happen.
"Always afraid he might fall or something, but never this," she added. "I've heard people say that now they're nearly afraid to go for a walk."
The 17-year-old is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond. They aren't releasing her name, how Cole died, or a motive for the killing. Detective Martin expects that information to be released when the girl appears in court but an arraignment date has not been set.
Funeral arrangements for Cole have been set for Friday.
