LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - When I was a kid, I loved when Christmas cards would come in the mail.

My favorite part? Snapshots of my distant cousins. When you don't get to see your relatives very often, those yearly holiday cards bridge the gap.

Nowadays, social media helps to bridge that gap between distant relatives, so some say Facebook has killed the Christmas card. It's like we have real-time glimpses into our Facebook friends' lives... Even those who live hundreds of thousands miles away.

I, however, still get that childlike thump in my heart when a Christmas card comes in the mail. Last night I received one from some of my best friends, complete with a couple funny photos of the two of them posing in front of their Christmas tree, one with and one without their pets.

To me, Christmas cards still bring holiday joy, even if you've seen photos of that couple or those kids 1,000 times throughout the year on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

Time Magazine writer, Nina Burleigh, writes, "...The demise of the Christmas photo card saddens me. It portends the end of the U.S. Postal Service. It signals the day is near when writing on paper is non-existent. Finally, it is part of a decline of a certain quality of communication, one that involved delay and anticipation, forethought and reflection."

So, what do you think? Should you still send out Christmas cards each year when most folks have already seen pictures on social media sites of the kids, the dogs, the food you've been eating, and the places you've visited throughout the year? Is it worth shelling out the dough to spread some holiday cheer via "snail mail?"

In a comment below, let us know what you think. Or, head over to the THV Facebook page and weigh in. We'd love to hear from you.
