GARLAND COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - Two men were arrested in Garland County on misdemeanor drug and weapons charges early Saturday.

According to police, Nicholas Rodriquez, 19, and Benjamin Jess Sherriff, 21, were arrested during a traffic stop shortly after 3 a.m.

Garland County Sheriff's Deputy J.T. Dunn said he was originally trying to pull a red Pontiac Sunfire over for a broken taillight and activated his lights as they crossed over the Lake Hamilton Bridge, but the car kept going. He said it eventually stopped under the King Expressway.

Upon noticing that Rodriquez did not have a valid driver's license and a strong odor of marijuana, Deputy Dunn questioned the two men. He said Rodriquez admitted to "smoking weed" earlier.

Dunn reported being able to retrieve a pair of brass knuckles, a plastic bag with suspected marijuana residue, a small bag of marijuana from Rodriquez's pocket, another small baggie of marijuana in a wallet, and a loaded .45-caliber handgun

The two were taken into custody and later released on $2,000 bond. They are both set to appear Dec. 18 in Garland County District Court.

Rodriquez was charged with possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, criminal use of a prohibited weapon, having defective equipment and no driver's license; Sherriff was charged with possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, and carrying a weapon.
