UNDATED (CBS) - If you've ever thought your mom was over-protective, imagine what Alex Collins must be thinking. He's a nationally-ranked high school football star who just signed to play for the Arkansas Razorbacks. But only after tackling what may be his biggest opponent.

For college football fans, National Signing Day is a big deal. This is when many highly touted high school recruits sign papers determining which college team they'll play for and possibly help make or break a program. It's even covered on national television.

But one star player missed all the hoopla, Alex Collins, South Plantation High School's speedy 5'11", 200 pound running back. He says, "My mom thought I should wait. It wasn't her necessarily grabbing the papers and running outside. It was more of her, protecting me to make sure I want to go to that school for the next four years of my life."

The drama began on Monday when Collins surprised everyone, including family and friends, by saying he wanted to pass over the University of Miami for the University of Arkansas.

Two days later, his mother Andrea McDonald, unhappy with the decision, sacked Collins' signing day ceremony. Under NCAA rules, a parent or legal guardian must sign the binding letter of intent for any athlete under the age of 21. So Collins called an audible, and Thursday brought in his father, who didn't marry his mother, to a press conference to sign it for him. Collin's mother was nowhere to be seen.

Collins says, "I have a good relationship with my mom. She has always been to every football game, she has never missed a football game, and I appreciate her for that."

Still, his mother has hired an attorney, one from Johnny Cochran's old law firm, who said, "Ms. McDonald hopes all NCAA rules and regulations were followed during today's signing. She is not seeking any personal financial gain because her only concern is for Alex's happiness and well beign."
