NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - North Little Rock police took two parents into custody on Monday after they admitted to spanking their child with cable.
"You know there is no reason to hit a child in the back area with those types of items," said Sgt. Brian Dedrick with the North Little Rock Police Department.
According to a NLRPD incident report, officers responded to a disturbance at Silver City Courts in reference to a child possibly being "spanked in excess." When police arrived, they could hear from outside the apartment a child screaming and crying and what sounded like a slapping sound.
"'We went ahead and made entry," said Sgt. Dedrick.
Fearing for the child's safety, the officers went into the unlocked apartment and were approached by the child's father who said he was "giving his child discipline." Police went into the bedroom where the child was and noticed "numerous red marks" on his back, arms, and side.
The officer stated in the report, "I could not count the amount of swollen red marks (lines) on his back due to the marks overlapping one another."
The mother came in and officers explained why they were at the apartment. She said that she had "disciplined" her child shortly before the father did, using "a cable" in the bedroom.
The officers took both parents into custody and called a Dept. of Human Services worker to the apartment. The DHS worker took custody of the parents' three children.
Both parents were charged with domestic battery in the second degree. Their names are being withheld in an attempt to protect the identities of the children.
