LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Traveling between locks and dams could soon be limited for boats out on the water this summer.
John Balgavy with the US Corp of Engineers said they're looking to cut costs and maintenance because of the aging infrastructure.
The Corps of Engineers are closing recreational vessels on all Arkansas locks during a scheduled time frame. They hope to prolong the life of the locks by closing them to recreational vessels Monday thru Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All locks will be available on weekends and will take into account special scheduled events such as bass tournaments, flotillas, and civic celebrations.
Balgavy said maintenance of this magnitude has not been done before, and it's a sign of aging infrastructure and the need fix potential problems.
The proposed recreation lockage policy was developed after a series of public workshops last year sought input from all users.
