Arkansas Business: February government jobs report preview

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Arkansas Business) -- The Dow hits another record high for the second day in a row. After a record-setting day on Tuesday, stocks continued their streak on Wednesday.

    February government jobs report

    Some of that coming from a preview of Friday's government jobs report for February.

    Payment processing company ADP said companies added 198,000 U.S. workers to their payrolls last month. It also revised upward the number of new workers it reported in January.

    The ADP report suggests that government spending cuts have yet to deter employers from hiring.

    We'll know about the labor market on Friday when the Labor Department gives its official report.

    Economists expect the government to say employers added 152,000 jobs in February, lowering the unemployment rate to 7.8 percent from 7.9 percent.

    Pine Bluff company merging with Houston company

    Here in Arkansas, Vivione Biosciences of Pine Bluff has announced a merger with PACEpartners of Houston.

    The move will make it a publicly traded company on the Venture Exchange portion of the Toronto Stock Exchange in Canada.

    Vivione CEO Kevin Kuykendall said the deal could provide an initial cash flow of up to $6 million. Vivione will become an operating subsidiary of PACE and will remain headquarted at the Pine Bluff Arsenal, where it set up operations last year.

    Vivione is a biotech firm whose products can detect E. coli and other bacteria in food in a matter of minutes.

    Jonesboro company buys St. Louis plant

    And in Jonesboro, Anchor Packaging Inc. of St. Louis has purchased the former Quad Graphics plant there.

    The Jonesboro Sun reporting that Anchor has bought the 423,000 SF manufacturing and warehousing plant.

    Anchor also has plants in Paragould and Marmaduke.

    The purchase price and the number of employees Anchor plans in Jonesboro were not released. Anchor makes food packaging products.

    Quad Graphics printed catalogs and magazines and had about 600 employees before closing last year.
