MAUMELLE, Ark. (KTHV) -- The city of Maumelle is considering working to get its own school district.

The city council is meeting tonight to see if it's a viable idea to separate from the Pulaski County School District.

Alderman Preston Lewis said he wanted to outline reasons and provide details about the potential district. He said the first step would be to form an advocacy group, and from there they would conduct a feasibility study, lobby state legislators, and conduct a media and social media campaign.

From a legal perspective, they are required to seek approval from the Board of the District to which they currently belong. Since PCSSD doesn't have a Board, they will seek the approval of Pulaski County Superintendent Dr. Jerry Guess. If PCSSD denies their request, they will then need to get a petition or referendum involving the citizens of Maumelle.

The Arkansas Department of Education will have the final say.
