LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas Senate has approved legislation that would ban the sale and use of sky lanterns in the state.

The Senate voted 25-10 Monday and passed the bill that would prohibit the sale and use of unmanned free-floating devices designed to contain an open flame known as sky lanterns.

Democratic Sen. Robert Thompson of Paragould sponsored the bill. Thompson called the devices a fire hazard.

The House approved the measure on a 54-26 vote earlier this month.

The bill now heads back to the House for lawmakers to concur in an amendment before it goes to the governor.

If the bill becomes law, it would become effective on Jan. 1, 2014.
