FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark.) - After five events, University of Arkansas senior Matt Kirbos is in fifth place at the John McDonnell Combined Events in Fayetteville.

Kirbos has 3,644 points at the end of day one and leads a trio of Razorbacks in the overall standings. He is joined by teammates Nathanael Franks in seventh place and Julius Sommer in eighth. This marks the first decathlon of the season for Arkansas.

Kirbos began his day with a pair of third-place finishes at 100 meters and in the long jump, respectively. After respective fifth- and sixth-place finishes at 100 meters and in the long jump, he had a runner-up event effort in the shot put with a day's best of 13.79m/45-3. Franks added 723 points with a third-place finish in the high jump with a final clearance of 1.91m/6-3.75. After crossing first in the 400 meters, he was later disqualified to drop him into seventh.
