MONTICELLO, Ark. (UAM) - The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team split with Delta State on the road Tuesday, winning the first game 8-4 before losing the second game 6-4.
UAM's offense was highlighted by a two-run homerun from junior Beth Johnson in the first game a grand slam homerun from sophomore Sara Matthews in the second game.
In the first game, the Cotton Blossoms (22-20) got on the board in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from senior Maggie Sands following a walk and a stolen base from junior Hannah Pendley. Johnson's two-run shot in the third inning gave UAM a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Statesmen (15-23) scored an unearned run in the fourth inning on a sac fly from Taylor Hughes following a UAM error. UAM went up 6-1 with three runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice from Sands, an RBI infield single from Johnson and an RBI single from freshman Kali Piha.
DSU answered with a two-run homerun from Kailtin Moore in the bottom of the fifth to trim the UAM lead to 6-3. UAM finalized its scoring in the top of the sixth with a two-run single from Sands, who finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI.
DSU finalized its scoring with an RBI double from Moore in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior Randa Perry (9-11) recorded the complete-game win after allowing four runs (three earned) off eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Miller Maddox (3-5) took the loss for DSU after allowing six runs (five earned) off nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk in the first 4.2 innings.
In the second game, UAM scored all four of its runs on one swing, Matthews' grand slam in the top of the fifth inning, which trimmed DSU's lead to 5-4.
The Lady Statesmen scored one in the first and four in the third, before finalizing the scoring with an RBI double from Taylor Hughes in the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore Katie Slaughter (11-7) took the loss after allowing five runs off seven hits with no strikeouts and no walk in the first 2.1 innings. Brittany Gonzales (8-11) earned the win for DSU in complete-game fashion after allowing four runs off 12 hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Cotton Blossoms are back in action this weekend for their final home series of the 2013 season. UAM welcomes rival Southern Arkansas to Monticello for a four-game series, starting this Saturday, April 13 with a double-header at 1 p.m. UAM will bid farewell to four seniors playing their final home games with a special Senior Day ceremony prior to the start of Sunday's double-header.
