PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The School of Education at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) will host a Literacy Symposium Friday, May 3 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Arkansas River Education Service Cooperative (ARESC) building located at 912 West 6th Street in Pine Bluff.

The symposium is free and open to the public, however, registration is required to guarantee a seat. The registration form can be downloaded at www.uapb.edu.

School Administrators, Teachers, Child Care Educators, Adult Education, Undergraduate/Graduate Students, University Faculty, Parents, and Community Leaders are encouraged to attend the symposium.

The symposium is part of the UAPB Literacy Institute that was started in 2008 and served as the research, planning, and implementation leader for eliminating illiteracy in the Delta and initially serving Jefferson County.

Working with early childhood, public schools, and adult education programs the literacy institute will develop proto-types and models to assist teachers, faculty, and parent organizations, will provide training and symposiums for administrators and staff operating programs in the Delta.

The major areas of research and program development included developing a prototype for exemplary programs and continuation of "seamless service delivery" in Early Childhood Education; Adult Literacy (adult basic and secondary-level education); Parenting Education; and Work Place Literacy. The program provided technical assistance to program providers in developing grants and securing other program resources for the delivery of services within the Delta. The program also assisted faith-based groups in becoming more involved in the efforts to eradicate illiteracy.
