UNDATED (REUTERS) -- NASA released time lapse video on Wednesday (May 1) showing a coronal mass ejection (CME) erupting from just around the edge of the sun.

The gigantic rolling solar wave can shoot over a billion tons of particles into space at over a million miles per hour.

Wednesday's CME occurred on the sun's limb and is not headed toward Earth. The video was taken in extreme ultraviolet light and in time lapse by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and covered about a two and a half hour period.

Particles from these types of eruptions have been known to affect satellites and electronic fields.
