LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Superheroes, zombies and well-meaning sponges are just some of the stars of comic books that will be given away free as part of the 12th annual "Free Comic Book Day."
Just a day after comic-book hero Iron Man returns to theaters, Iron Man and other comics stars will be available in free comics from local comic shops celebrating Free Comic Book Day.
A variety of free comics, featuring characters ranging from Spongebob Squarepants to the heroes of "The Walking Dead" will be available at comic book stores throughout the world on Saturday, May 4.
Robert Kirkman, who created "The Walking Dead," hopes fans of the show will seek out comic shops.
"I'm very proud of the fact that the success of The Walking Dead show is bringing people into comic shops and introducing them to our fine medium," Kirkman said at FreeComicBookDay.com. "I hear constantly from tons of retailers talking about how new faces appear in their shops looking for The Walking Dead. Hopefully being able to give something out for free will ramp up that phenomenon."
Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the 20th century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse storylines that capture the imagination of the readers.
More than 4.6 million free comic books are expected to be given away at more than 2,000 participating locations. The local comic book shop pays for these books at a discounted rate to give away to clientele. This is the 12th year for Free Comic Book Day, which was created by retailer Joe Field.
Field is also the former president of comics retailer association ComicsPRO.
