CONWAY, Ark. (UCA) -- Junior righthander Bryce Biggerstaff threw a two-hit gem Sunday as the University of Central Arkansas Bears downed Southeastern Louisiana 2-1 in the Southland Conference series finale at Bear Stadium.
Biggerstaff, from Central Arkansas Christian, threw his third complete game of the season, allowing just two hits and one run, while striking out seven and walking one. He allowed an infield single in the second inning and not another hit until the eighth inning when the Lions got their only run off a single, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly.
The Bears (32-13, 11-10) got their first hit off SLU starter Kaleb Manuel (3-4) in the fifth inning and finally broke through with a pair of runs in the sixth. Senior Forrestt Allday led off with a single to center field and moved to second on Jonathan Davis' sacrifice bunt. Senior Ethan Harris then doubled down the right-field line for the first run and senior catcher Michael Marietta singled to left to score Harris for a 2-0 lead.
Biggerstaff (4-2), who threw only 90 pitches, set the Lions down in order in seven of the nine innings, including the ninth when he struck out the first two batters and got Ben Hernandez to fly out to Allday in right field for the final out. Marietta finished 2 for 3 with an RBI as UCA totaled just five hits. Manuel struck out eight and allowed four hits for the Lions (30-18, 13-8).
UCA plays UALR at Dickey-Stephens Park at 6:30 Tuesday before returning home to host Stephen F. Austin in SLC play next weekend.
