GREENWOOD, Ark. (AP) - Authorities in Sebastian County say a man holding his mother at knifepoint was shot and wounded by a deputy.

Sebastian County Sheriff Bill Hollenbeck says the shooting happened early Thursday at a home at the intersection of U.S. 71 and Arkansas 10. Hollenbeck says a Sebastian County deputy and a Greenwood police officer found a man holding a knife to his mother's chest when they arrived at about 4 a.m.

Hollenbeck tells Fort Smith television station KHBS that the deputy shot the man once in the shoulder. The man was then taken to hospital, where he is under the supervision of a guard.

Authorities say the deputy and police officer have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation.
