JONESBORO, Ark. (ASU) - Sharika Nelvis of the Arkansas State University women's outdoor track and field team claimed honorable mention honors for this week's (May 14) U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track National Athlete of the Week Award.
Nelvis, a junior, was among six women's NCAA Division I athletes this week to receive honorable mention laurels as Arizona's Brigetta Barrett attained top national honors. The National Athlete of the Week Award spotlights exceptional performances by student-athletes from around the nation and six athletes, comprised of three male and three female athletes, are recognized in NCAA Divisions I, II, and III.
Nelvis won four events at the 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend (May 10-12) to earn the SBC Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer Award and all-conference first-team accolades as the Red Wolves finished the conference meet with a second- place 131 points. The 2013 A-State co-captain started out by placing first in the long jump with a personal-record 20-11.96/6.40m performance in last Saturday's (May 11) second day of competition. The 2011-12 USTFCCCA Outdoor Track All-America Second-Team selection would post first-place performances in three running events on Sunday (May 12), taking top honors in the 100-meter dash (11.60 time), 200-meter dash (23.54), and the 100-meter hurdles (13.24). Nelvis set a new SBC Outdoor Championship record in the 100-meter hurdles, bettering the mark of 13.28 set in 2011 (5/15) by Alysha Adams of North Texas, and also posting the sixth-best time to date among the 2013 NCAA-I West Region Outdoor Qualifiers.
The 2013 A-State co-captain duplicated her 2012 SBC Outdoor Championships performance of winning four outdoor events en route to being named the conference women's most outstanding track performer as a result of being the conference meet's top scorer and garnering first-team all-league laurels.
This outdoor season, Nelvis currently leads the Sun Belt Conference with top outdoor times in the 100 meters (11.41), 200 meters (23.40), 100-meter hurdles (13.08), and the long jump (20-11.96/6.40m).
Nelvis' name is prevalent on the 2013 NCAA-I West Region Qualifying list as she ranks sixth in the 100-meter hurdles, seventh in the long jump, tied for 18th in the 100 meters, and 23rd in the 200 meters.
Nelvis will be participating in the 2013 NCAA-I West Preliminary Round May 23-25 at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
