VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, CA (CNN) -- Here's a satellite rocket launch that's probably unlike any you've seen before!

This Pegasus missile launched from a NASA plane yesterday carried a new space telescope into orbit!

The "IRIS" spacecraft, as it's called, will be used to investigate the mysterious zone between the surface of the sun and its atmosphere.

Astronomers hope to learn how solar material moves, and just how the outer regions of the sun get so hot; more than three-and-a-half-million degrees Fahrenheit!

Scientists say that knowledge could lead to better understanding of ultra-violet or "UV" radiation that affects earth's climate.
