HOMEWOOD, AL (CNN/WBRC) -- A baby in Alabama died Wednesday after being found unresponsive inside her parents' car. The 1-year-old had been left in the car in sweltering heat for more than three hours.

As temperatures surge in many parts of the country, authorities say the tragedy serves as a sad reminder to parents about leaving children in the car.

This is the SUV a 1-year-old little girl was found in Wednesday afternoon. Chris Conn says, "The daughter was radiating heat. Much hotter than we would be. I would say 105, 110 degrees. Not in a good state."

Chris Conn tried to administer CPR to the little girl. He works next to the nail shop where the parents work. He says, "I noticed my neighbors in hysterics. Ran next door, found their daughter lying on the floor unresponsive. When I asked them what had happened, their daughter had been left in the car since 10 a.m."

He said emergency crews arrived and took the child to children's hospital, where she later died.
Sergeant Andrew Didcoct with Homewood police said this is the first death involving a child in a vehicle this year. He says, "Remind parents to check their back seat before they exit their car and think twice before they, when they drop off a child or pick up a child and remember where the child is."

Conn says, "It's sad. There's nothing you can say about it. It shouldn't have happened."

Local news station WBRC reports police are investigating the girl's death. So far, no charges have been filed.
