MAYFLOWER, Ark. (KTHV) -- Oil pouring from the Pegasus Pipeline four months ago, still creates frustration for Mayflower residents. Some residents THV spoke with on Monday said they are not only frustrated and angry at ExxonMobil, but sick.
Ann Jarrell lives just 300 yards from where the Pegasus Pipeline ruptured and was told to stay in her home at the time of the spill.
"I've been sick," Jarrell said. Her daughter and grandson were living at her home at the time of the spill. The child was 4-months old, and now has respiratory problems. "They've got him on a couple of different inhalers now. He has to take one in the morning and one at night. The other he has to take every two to four hours just to keep breathing. His upper respiratory system is severely infected."
A meeting took place on Monday at the Mayflower Full Gospel Church. A representative of Congressman Tim Griffin attended the meeting to speak with residents and take notes. At that meeting residents, spoke their minds, claiming toxins are still evident in the air and the water.
Genieve Long said she and other Mayflower residents are not getting the necessary help from people specialized in chemical exposure.
"It is unfortunate that we don't have the proper means of testing here within the state to help these citizens long-term or short-term. I think that should almost be mandatory in any type of disaster like this that you have a medical response team to work specifically with the citizens," Long said.
THV attempted to contact Exxon by phone Monday to explain the claims made by residents. Instead the company replied via email, stating they have nothing new to provide, and they did not know about the meeting. Organizers of Monday's meeting said they have invited ExxonMobil to every gathering, but the company refuses to attend.
Exxon has said previously the air quality is safe in the Mayflower area. They have given residents in the affected area the approval to return home, despite residents' claims about toxins.
