LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - It's a story THV 11 has been following for more than week. 12-year-old Kali Hardig's life is riding on an experimental drug.

Kali's mom said Kali responded to a nurse who asked her to squeeze her hand Wednesday. She says as a mother, at this point, she'll take any sign of improvement.

Parents will go to great lengths to save their children and Traci Hardig is no different. She said, "You know you're willing to try anything."

Her daughter is fighting parasitic meningitis and one of the medicines she's on is an experimental anti-amoeba drug, never used at this step in the process. If it works, as it seems to be so far, Kali would be the third person in the world to survive this infection.

The drug was sent to Kali from the Centers for Disease Control.

"We think it works by basically causing the cell of the amoeba to burst," said Dr. Michelle Moss with Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Even with the improvements, Kali's mom said they're just taking it hour by hour, day by day.

"You know it's the whole state, and the whole country that keep asking me what we need most and I keep telling them, 'Pray for my baby because I believe that's the only thing that's working,' she said.

The following message was posted on Prayers For Kali Le Ann Facebook page late Wednesday night:

We're are praising God this morning for another good night. Today the doctors are going to take her off dialysis to for a short time check her kidney function. They will also be lowering the vent to make Kali breathe more on her own. Also an MRI will be done to check her brain function. Kali is once again heading in right direction. Please continue to pray for Kali and her family.
