LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Kali Hardig's mother said her daughter, though heavily sedated, is awake.

Traci Hardig said Kali can move her toes, squeeze her hand, and smile slightly when her picture is taken.  Kali can also respond to people talking by using her eyes to follow them around the room.

"The doctors have even asked her to give a thumbs up, and she's able to give a thumbs up on both hands, and then just a while ago she was asked whether she was in pain or not, and they asked her to shake her head yes or no and she shook her head no," said Traci Hardig.

Kali's mom said the 12-year-old has passed all of her tests, except for a muscle test.  This will be the next milestone as doctors want to remove her from a ventilator.

Traci said Kali began physical therapy on Monday. The Benton girl contracted the usually-fatal parasitic meningitis infection two weeks ago after swimming at an area water park, which has since been closed.

"Kali's class went out to sell lemonade and sold these bracelets that have 'Kali's Krew #3' on them," added her mother.

The youngsters raised $8,000 total for Kali's medical bills--One family traveled from Beebe just to donate.
