FLORENCE, Italy (CBS) -- Experts were investigating the extent of the damage Monday to a statue inside Florence's Museo dell'Opera del Duomo after it was accidentally struck by an American tourist.

The statue represents the virgin and is named The Annunciation it dates back to the 1397 and was carved by Giovanni D'Ambrogio.

The tourist, reportedly, apologized for damaging a finger of the statue but may still face charges. The incident comes just days after vandals scribbled graffiti on the marble facade of one of Florence's prized historic buildings, the cathedral's 11th century Baptistry. Someone scribbled in permanent black marker, which experts are now struggling to deal with.
