CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) - College Day events brought big crowds to Conway as thousands of students move back to town for the upcoming semester.
For thirteen years the city's popular welcome ceremony has been hosted by the True Holiness Saints Center on the Sunday before classes begin. Conway is Central Arkansas' largest college town with more than 15,000 students attending three colleges and universities. "College day for Conway, Arkansas is a huge return for 25 percent of our population," said mayor Tab Townsell. "We're here to welcome them into our community not just as college students but as fellow residents as well and to wish them the best."
Lunch was provided to students and their families following welcome speeches from college presidents and mayor Townsell. The event is also an opportunity for local businesses to get their name out to students moving to Conway for the first time.
A number of information booths were set up near the lunch area with business owners handing out coupons and other deals. "We get a lot of business just from this event alone," mentioned Katrina Williams, owner of Katrina's House of Style. Williams has had a booth at college day since its first year in 2000. "Most of the people we do are college students."
