FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark) - In recognition of his victory at the Missouri Southern Stampede, junior Stanley Kebenei has been named the USTFCCCA National Runner of the Week for Division I.
The Nakura, Kenya, native navigated the 8,000-meter course in Joplin, Mo., in a first-place time of 23:25.75, finishing more than 28 seconds ahead of the field. Kebenei is now 2-for-2 this season having also posted a win in the season-opening race in Fayetteville.
Competing in his first season of cross country for Arkansas, Kebenei paced a 1-2 finish for the No. 5 Razorbacks. He was followed by teammate Raymond Joseph and fellow top-10 performers, sophomore Cale Wallace in sixth place and freshman Aiden Swain in ninth. Overall, Arkansas' crew finished in second place, just one point behind Oklahoma in the team standings. The Razorbacks ran without Kemoy Campbell, David Flynn and Gabe Gonzales, the team's 2-3-4 runners in the season opener.
Monday's selection is the second award of the season for Kebenei, who was honored previously as the SEC Runner of the Week (Sept. 10) for his performance at the Arkansas Duals. He was a two-time All-American during the 2013 track and field season, earning accolades at 5,000 meters indoors and in the 3,000-meter steeplechase outdoor. In Monday's release of the regional rankings, Arkansas held steady as the top-ranked team in the South Central Region.
The Razorbacks now prepare for the 25th Annual Chile Pepper Festival which will be contested Oct. 5 at Agri Park in Fayetteville. The men's 8K is slated for a 9:45 a.m. start.
