LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A spokesman for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department says plans to improve the Interstate 30 bridge that crosses the Arkansas River do not include widening the distance between piers in the navigation channel.

The bridge that connects the cities of Little Rock and North Little Rock was briefly closed on Thursday after a towboat operator reported scraping a protective pier. It was reopened after inspectors determined there was no damage to the bridge's supports.

Highways spokesman Randy Ort said Friday the agency plans to widen the bridge in the next few years to increase its capacity. Ort says about 130,000 vehicles cross the span each day. Ort says the work did not originally include changes to piers in the channel and he does not know if that will change.
