LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Once news breaks, it then can fall into one of two categories, winners or losers. We have some prime examples lined up for you on this beautiful Monday.
When the government shut down, the college graduates who volunteered for the Americorps Vistas program lost all financial support. When we aired the story, response came pouring in to Our House, the local Americorps headquarters, and donations were made to help the young people in their commitment to giving. They went from losers to big, big winners.
Our first losers of the day are the jerks who stole the batteries from the vehicles associated with Watershed--the very same cars and vans that'll be needed to deliver food during the holidays. Awful.
Willow Springs Water Park is a winner. Kali Hardig, who was stricken with a rare brain disorder after swimming there, returned to the Park to promote a benefit fishing tournament. This is being held by park owners David and Lou Ann Ratliff as a way to raise money for the Hardig family.
The White County Single Parent Scholarship Foundation is also a winner. This marked their 15th year of awarding single parents scholarships to finish their education, with the highlight being the Louise Beebe Scholarship, named for the Governor's late mother who was also a single parent. Since 1999, 425 scholarships worth over $400,000 have been awarded.
The Autsim Speaks walk Saturday morning joins the ranks of winners as well. Ed and I witnessed a minor miracle. Just under 2,000 walkers and runners raised over $109,000 in an effort to find the gene, the protein, or the trigger that is responsible for the growing number of children with autism. They are hard to figure out, but they're so easy to love.
Finally, the Government shut down. It has made us all losers, helpless to do anything about it but hope they can figure something out. But, the woman at the camper park who Lisa Hutson interviewed last week, becomes a winner because of the way she expressed herself and in the process spoke for all of us.
"They're acting like children, and I would like to kick some rear bigtime, and they need to put their big boy superman panties on and get the job done," she said.
