MAGNOLIA, Ark. (SAU) - The Southern Arkansas University Mulerider and Lady Mulerider cross country teams, along with Sigma Pi fraternity, will host the Lois Davis Invitational on Saturday, October 12. This event is hosted in honor of Lois Davis, the late SAU cross country team member who died in a tragic car accident in May of 2010. The meet will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the women's collegiate 5k, followed by the men's collegiate 8k immediately after.
Seven different races will be held at the invitational, ranging from college men and women to junior high boys and girls. 53 teams with over 700 individuals from the tri-state area will run at the meet.
Along with all of the collegiate, high school and junior high team races, an "open 5k" option is also available; this particular 3.1 mile race, beginning at 9:30 a.m., will be open to campus organizations and anyone from the community who wish to run "unattached".
A course painting competition is also open to campus organizations, which will be managed and judged by Sigma Pi. In this competition, organizations will pay $15 for a plot or plots of the race course and paint them however they please. When the races are over, members of the fraternity and the cross country teams will choose the course painting winners. Course painting will begin on Friday afternoon and will last until sundown.
All of the proceeds from the course painting competition will be split towards raising awareness for texting and driving and to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. This meet will not only appeal to the athletes running the races, but also to the community; bouncy houses will be provided for children, booths will be set up to sell race t-shirts and other items, and Sigma Pi will be selling chicken quarters, baked beans and potato salad. The proceeds from this cook-out will also be donated to the organizations previously mentioned.
This invitational is the cross country teams' one and only home meet, so be sure to come out and support these hardworking Muleriders and Lady Muleriders!
